There are several subspecialties in paediatrics and these include :

Neonatology – This area of paediatrics is concerned with the care of the newborn from birth to 28days of age. The neonatologist is commonly faced with such problems as perinatal asphyxia, neonatal jaundice, neonatal sepsis/infections and prematurity. Other problems encountered by the neonatologist include congenital abnormalities/deformoties, birth trauma and other myriad of problems that a neonate could present with.

Cardiology – Paediatric cardiology is concerned with the treatment of cardiac/heart problems. These cardiac problems could be congenital ( ‘born with it’) or acquired (occurring after birth) heart diseases. Common congenital heart diseases seen by the paediatric cardiologist include ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of great arteries etc. On the other hand common acquired heart diseases in paediatrics include acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart diseases, infective endocarditis, myocarditis etc. There are several less common cardiac diseases in paediatrics. The paediatric cardiologist works closely with cardiothoracic surgeons for repairs of structural heart defects.
